"Ancestors"

About the Song...
One day in July, I was in meditation and suddenly felt moved to tears. I wondered what had happened. It felt like I was being blessed, but I couldn't put my finger on it. After my meditation, I went for a walk and heard a melody being sung to me, evoking this same sense of so much love. I recorded the melody on my phone and continued trying to connect with the source of this feeling. I then remembered that my grandmother had passed away in the summer, some years ago. I messaged my dad to see when she had passed and he said, July 5th. It happened to be July 5th. Every year since she passed, she would make her presence known to me on her birthday and the anniversary of her passing. That particular year, I hadn't remembered.

A couple weeks later, I went to see my dear friend and amazing guitar player, Scott Huckabay and we started workshopping the song. The song came together in one 12-hour day of playing it. We sang and played this song that I originally called, "My Grandmother's Song" on his sacred land at the foot of these beautiful mountains, which had been the last stronghold of Scott's ancestors, the Apache Nation. While we were playing this song, it felt as though all of our ancestors came to show themselves; to remind us that they are here. They are guiding us. They are loving us. They are holding us in prayer and working behind the scenes for our good. It felt like they were singing through this song, welcoming us back into their sacred circle of life, reminding us that we are never alone or forgotten.

We played this song, at this sacred mountain - and also felt the presence of Our Mother Earth holding us. Our Mother Earth who is also our ancestor. The trees, the rivers, the rocks, the mountains, the wind, the sun, the stars, the moon are all our relations - holding us and stewarding us toward a beautiful future. We can feel them with us when we take the time to listen and breathe.

This song is a tribute to the love that has held us through generations. Regardless of the past, may we look on our ancestors with loving, grateful eyes and bless them. In this now moment, we have the capacity to shed light on any shadows in our ancestral line which helps heal those sources of pain and disconnection. When we can face our family with love and acceptance, it frees us to move forward on our path. When we can feel their love and acceptance, it empowers us to heed the calling of our own Destiny. Love redeems.

When in right relationship, our ancestors stand behind us supporting us. Some ancestors are already there, while some we can place there. We can recognize that they are Divine Beings on the path of their own fulfillment. It is not our job to carry the burdens of those who've come before. They are the bigger ones, we are the littler ones in the family system. Yet, when we see them with love, send them light, and trust in them that they can handle the paths they've chosen for themselves, this empowers us to also trust in ourselves to choose the path of integrity, light and self responsibility. We allow into the space of our sovereign lives only those energies which honor and reinforce our highest and best, while all other energies are allowed be satisfied elsewhere.

I pray that my family and all families know the spirit of compassion and forgiveness - and we find our way to the love that unites us over and above any differences or hurt that may be present.

May we feel the love of our family. May all generations past and future be healed and whole.

lyrics

Verse:
The sacred mountain is calling you
Heaven and earth have been waiting for you to arrive
The ancient ones guard the gates of truth
To your destined (new) life

The holy water flows down the stream
Taking a drink liberates the dream
The ancestors greet your awakening
Welcome in
to their circle once again

Chorus:
(With) Our grandmothers are guiding us singing their songs filled with memories
Our grandfathers are holding us in the loving arms of family

Verse:
The butterflies float on by
& Remind us of
the precious gift of life
And those who’ve loved us before our time
Give us the wings to fly
